Odds and Ends
Lazy Susan This little wiz of a gadget is great for your kitchen. It can hold your spices with ease and with a little twist of the hand you can send it spinning to find your spice. I have also found it be invaluable in the office where I keep my pen holder and other little office accessories stored on it. This way I don¡Çt have to go around hunting for my stapler, glue, spare ink cartridge, or even surprise, surprise, that little gem of innovation, the USB key. A Labeler Having your office in your home is no piece of cake and I have found that I have more work related books, DVD¡Çs, and electrical items than ever. To combat this I invested in a labeler and went around labeling everything in the house from the bathroom caddy to the kitchen sink! Shelving Units These days you will find that shelving units are inexpensive and easy to assemble by yourself as well. Why do I mention them here you ask? Well, if you like books, music and movies, there¡Çs a good chance that you will have collected a few of them over the years. Unfortunately even if you only collected a ¡Èfew¡É of them over the years you probably ended up with more than you can count comfortably count. Shelving units of all sorts come in handy for these things. You will find that just by putting things away in the shelves you will be clearing off space and decluttering your rooms. The books etc. don¡Çt even need to be in any sort of order to begin with. You can get to that later, what you need to do right now is to get everything out of the way and in some semblance of order. Hooks These are among some of the best inventions ever made by man. You can use hooks everywhere to hang up just about anything and everything. Dusters, mops, and brooms can all be hung up on the hooks, as can overalls, gardening tools, and other sundry tools. They work really well in the kitchen as well and you will find yourself automatically hanging your tea cloths and aprons and things on the hooks if you just place them in the right place. They should be at eye level, or hand level, and in a place that you will notice them or pass by them on a regular basis. Don¡Çt place your hooks in out of the way places, or hard to reach places. Then they will just become eyesores sticking out of your walls everywhere. Corkboard /Whiteboard This is as good a way as any other to get rid of the clutter in your homes. By this I¡Çm talking mainly about things like postcards you want to keep, your children¡Çs drawings, notes, and other important memorabilia. Instead of keeping everything pinned up haphazardly on the walls, you might want to look into investing in a corkboard or a magnetic board. This is a great way to keep things all in one place. And as they¡Çre relatively inexpensive, you can invest in a few of them to place in various places around your house where things like this tend to accumulate. Wastepaper baskets One thing that most people never have enough of is wastepaper baskets. These little goodies can help you in reducing clutter without even having to think about it. All you need to do is to place a few of these in easily accessible areas. Just one won¡Çt do. This way you can throw away any unwanted junk immediately without having to go around looking for a bin. Most people I know keep only one, maybe two on hand and this is alright if you¡Çre not a clutter bug. If you clutter up more regularly than you declutter though, you need all the help that you can get. And placing wastepaper baskets within easy reach is one way to go about it. Besides which you can get some unobtrusive nice looking bins which blend in with your décor as well these days. Penholders Another must have item for the house. You wouldn¡Çt believe how many pens you can¡Çt find just when you need them! To control this and to stop the pens from breeding like rabbits one necessary item that I keep in every room of my house is a pen holder. Naturally I keep a small notepad along with this as well, but they tend to get lost faster than the pens! To counteract this, I¡Çve kept a whiteboard with a marker attached on a string next to the phone. This way, if ever I need it there¡Çs always one writing board and pen that I can use without having to go hunting around. Foldable hampers There was never such a good invention since the advent of sliced bread! Foldable hampers, which also now come with an attached zippable lid, are invaluable items. All I can say is bless the person who invented these. I keep a few dozen of these on hand scattered throughout the house, and they act as emergency hold-alls if ever I¡Çve let myself slip ad some of the clutter has piled up on me! They¡Çre also ideal in that they can be used as guest hampers, not to mention the fact that they¡Çre good at hauling light things around if you¡Çre decluttering your rooms. On the part of decluttering I¡Çve also used them as temporary storage bins into which I would dump the items I most needed and the items which I had yet to find a home for. Boxes (with Lids!) Another invaluable invention, and one that has saved me much hassle over the past few years. I would be lost without these and that¡Çs the plain truth. I have used them mainly for storage purposes of items which I use but seldom. These include my handbag collection, my belt collection and would you believe it those bulky photograph albums which I still have for some reason! I also use them to store extra items which I can¡Çt use, as well as recyclables (for me that is), and items which I can¡Çt give away due to the fact that they¡Çre something along the lines of heirlooms. These last items, I store in boxes which aren¡Çt see-through so that as little light as possible gets into them. The one thing that you don¡Çt want cluttering up your house though in the way of boxes, is lots and lots of small boxes. They can take over your house just as easily as all the other items of pack-rat items you collect can. In fact I will go a step further and say that if you¡Çre not careful you will find that they take you over more easily than the other junk, because ostensibly you are buying the boxes to store away the junk. It¡Çs a vicious circle and unless you understand it for what it is, you will find your house overrun and inundated with small, small boxes of every size and type. I speak from experience! I had a box for just about everything. And when I went through these I found that I didn¡Çt even need the ¡Èjust about everything¡É things either. So out they went, right along with the boxes. I did keep a few of the better boxes though, since you do need some of them, just not a houseful of them. I made sure I was ruthless about these, even to the extent of throwing out some of the boxes which I had gotten for a song. They were good bargains, yes, but I really didn¡Çt need so many small boxes in my home. Below is a short list of the different types of boxes that you can get. · Perspex – see through type of boxes · Rattan boxes – great for storing sewing items, remote controls etc. · Leatherette boxes – these are great for storing not only your clutter but they can double up as a space for your lamp or a vase. · A tightly closing box which keeps out the dust, and where you can keep any unwanted photographs, in good condition. · Bandboxes – these are boxes of yore, but in some places they still do manufacture them. These along with my collection hatboxes are among my favorite boxes. · Hatboxes – these are very stylish types of boxes to have and also make great gift box ideas! I¡Çve kept mine in the various rooms serving various functions. · Shoeboxes – there is probably no more versatile a box than the shoebox. Most people will use it to store something or other, and the best thing about it? When it becomes ratty and unusable all you need to do is to throw it away! There is simply no sentiment attached to a shoebox. · Under-bed storage boxes · Crates – while technically not a box, it will pass muster and can help you in a tight spot · Cardboard boxes – these are definitely your friend when you¡Çre going around decluttering, and storing. You might want to keep them away from water though! Vac bags These little gems have proved their worth to me over and over again. I can store just about anything I want in them with no hassle. My favorite use for this however, was to store my duvets away. The vac bags made it easy to do it and if had them laundered before storing they turned to be pretty fresh and immediately usable. Stair-baskets This sounds odd beyond reckoning but I assure you that they do exist. These are specially made baskets which sits on stairs. They will fit most normal size stairs and they come in attractive designs as well. But most of all, they are good because you can dump the things that you want to take upstairs in the basket and take it up in one go. What stops most people from taking things upstairs is the fact that they need to traipse up and down the stairs when they could be doing something better like sitting back and relaxing. These baskets can help you to defeat the clutter which can overtake you when you keep the things that belong upstairs, downstairs. Black Bin Bags Invaluable items these, especially the ones that don¡Çt break on you in the middle of carrying something. But why did I include them in this section? For the simple reason that they will be one of your best friends before your decluttering days are over. You can use them for multiple purposes. They don¡Çt just need to hold garbage, although they can do that as well. You can also use them to store away items which you will later want to take to a charity, you can even store your clothes in them when you¡Çre sorting through your closets. They will also be good at holding your paperwork temporarily and they also serve double duty as temporary hampers when you run out of space when you forget to empty the existing hampers! |
